Yading Nature Reserve — the complete guide

The three sacred peaks of Yading are the most photographed corner of Western Sichuan. Here is the honest version: what the hike actually costs, how high it goes, and why the reservation system matters more than the ticket price.

What Yading actually is

Yading (稻城亚丁) is a nature reserve in Daocheng County, in the far south-west of the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. It is built around three sacred peaks — Chenresig (仙乃日, 6,032 m), Jampelyang (央迈勇, 5,958 m) and Chenadorje (夏诺多吉, 5,958 m) — which Tibetans regard as incarnations of compassion, wisdom and power.

The reserve is a real pilgrimage landscape, not a theme park. The peaks tower over glacial valleys, high pastures and two alpine lakes that are the destination of the famous long hike.

The key to enjoying it is altitude. The gateway town, Shangri-La Town (香格里拉镇), sits at about 2,900 m, the Yading village inside the reserve at 3,900 m, and the two lakes the hikers aim for at 4,600 m and 4,700 m.

Getting there from Chengdu

There are two honest ways in. Fly to Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY), the world's highest civil airport at 4,411 m, then drive about two hours to Shangri-La Town. The flight is fast but the altitude arrives all at once — landing at 4,411 m and then climbing is harder on the body than driving up slowly.

Or drive overland, which is what we recommend. The road follows the G318 through Kangding, Xinduqiao and Litang, then turns south to Daocheng. It is roughly 800 km from Chengdu and best split over two days each way. The slow ascent gives your body a day to adapt before you stand at 4,600 m.

  • Chengdu → Kangding (2,560 m) — ~4 h, overnight acclimatisation.
  • Kangding → Litang (4,014 m) via Xinduqiao — ~6 h, the big climbing day.
  • Litang → Shangri-La Town (2,900 m) — ~4 h, descend and sleep low.

Inside the reserve: the two hikes

Everyone does one of two things. The short line (短线) runs from Chonggu Monastery to Pearl Lake (珍珠海, Zhomala Tso), a gentle three-to-four-kilometre return that stays low and finishes with a view of Chenresig reflected in the lake.

The long line (长线) is the famous one: from Luorong Pasture (洛绒牛场, 4,180 m) up to Milk Lake (牛奶海, 4,600 m) and Five-Color Lake (五色海, 4,700 m). It is about ten to twelve kilometres return, most of it climbing, at the very top of the altitude range where it stops being fun. The trail to the two lakes — the "Vajra challenge line" — opens roughly 15 April to 25 November and closes when snow makes it unsafe.

Do the short line on day one, sleep, and only attempt the long line the next morning with an early start.

Tickets, reservation, and what it costs

Yading is online reservation only — there is no walk-up ticket window. Reserve through the official WeChat mini-program or a major OTA platform, and do it days ahead: the daily cap is around 15,000 and popular dates sell out well in advance.

The standard entrance fee is 146 yuan in high season and 120 in low season, plus a shuttle bus and an electric cart. For much of 2026 the entrance, shuttle and cart have been temporarily free while the pricing is re-audited. That changes without much notice, so check the official mini-program for the price that applies on your dates rather than trusting any fixed figure.

Foreign passport holders can reserve through OTA platforms, but it is worth confirming with the platform that your passport is accepted as the ID type before you pay.

Altitude and how to manage it

Sleep in Shangri-La Town at 2,900 m, not inside the reserve. Spend your first afternoon doing nothing strenuous, drink water, skip alcohol, and let the short line be your first test the next day.

The long line takes you to 4,700 m, which is higher than a person can comfortably arrive at without adaptation. If a headache, nausea or breathlessness sets in and worsens, turn back — the lakes are not worth an emergency descent.

Travel insurance that covers high-altitude evacuation is not optional here; check yours before you book.

Best season and timing

September to late October is the classic season: golden larch, clear air and the peaks standing sharp. April to May brings spring flowers and snow still on the ridges. June to August is green but rainy, and November to March often sees the long line closed by snow while the valley stays open for the short line.

If you can only come once, aim for mid-October and accept the crowds that come with the colour.

In this guide

Do I need a Tibet permit for Yading?

+

No. Yading is in Sichuan Province, so you need only a valid China visa — no Tibet Travel Permit is required. The paperwork you cannot skip is the online reservation for the reserve itself.

Can I do the Milk Lake hike in one day?

+

Yes, most people do it as a single day starting from Luorong Pasture. Start early, watch the last shuttle down, and be honest about your fitness — it is ten to twelve kilometres of steady climbing at high altitude.

How many days do I need?

+

Two days inside the reserve (short line then long line), plus the travel to get there. Overland from Chengdu realistically means five days minimum for the whole trip.
